Title IX was produced in 1972 in hopes of eliminating sexual discrimination in programs that are federally supported. In years since additions and revisions have been made to the Title including lawsuits, some of the additions, however, have had both positive and negative effects. The main focus of the act is to allow women to have equal opportunities and allow women to pursue higher leadership positions such as coaches, athletic directors, officials, and athletes (Bisol). Due to ongoing changes in the Title, women have yet to acquire many leadership positions. Being said, women in today's job society have little to no female leadership or role models. For example, we can look at the number of male athletic directors versus female and see there is still a significant difference. Although this act has been passed, women may still be facing difficulty in wanting higher leadership positions. Many women are afraid of taking on the higher roles due to given criticism that will take place once they are there. Not many people are used to the idea of having a female as their boss or leader. It would be so easy for a male in today's society tell a woman that she cannot complete a task at hand, and that's all it takes for a woman to lose her confidence (Bisol).
While there are positive sides to the completion of Title IX, there are some negative sides as well. More women have been given the opportunity to compete in athletics and to take on leadership positions, however, what some collegiate schools have gone to may be creating another problem. Title IX enforces and equal number of male athletes as females making some schools cut back on their athletic programs. Thousands of male athletes have been cut since the creation of Title IX, taking away some opportunities of reaching higher level competition. Most colleges rely on their larger sports, mainly football and basketball, to bring in their sponsors and income. With the cut back in male athletes, this could prove as a problem being that there is no female football teams at the collegiate levels yet. Therefore, possible additions may be made in the future towards Title IX such as rather than cutting back the male athletes to equal the number of females, accept more female athletes into their programs. Additions and changes are to continue being made and Title IX will continue in hopes of eliminating any sexual discrimination.
